Hair care is not only about which formula you choose. Everyday handling can contribute to damage, especially when wet hair is rubbed, pulled or repeatedly exposed to heat.
Reduce friction
Instead of rubbing with a towel, wrap hair to absorb water. Detangle carefully rather than brushing aggressively. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that straight hair can dry a little before combing, while textured or tightly curled hair is better combed while damp with a wide-tooth comb.
Use less heat and tension
Let hair air-dry when possible. When using a dryer or other hot tool, choose a lower setting and reduce how often you use it. Avoid repeatedly pulling hair into tight hairstyles; a looser style puts less tension on the hair.
Space out chemical services
Coloring, perming and relaxing can all add stress. Avoid stacking treatments too closely together and follow professional and product instructions. If changing your routine does not improve the problem, consult a dermatologist to check for an underlying cause.
