Hair Shedding: Why the Cause Matters More Than the Label

Hair Shedding: Why the Cause Matters More Than the Label

A shampoo name cannot explain why someone is losing hair. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, hair loss can have many causes, from hereditary changes to illness, stressful events, certain hairstyles or underlying medical conditions.

Different problems need different responses

Some people notice increased shedding after childbirth, illness or a stressful period. Others experience gradual thinning or hair loss associated with repeated pulling from tight styles. These situations are not interchangeable, and results from a cosmetic product should not be assumed to address the cause.

Know the limits of routine care

Gentle cleansing and careful styling are useful habits, but they are not a diagnosis. If you suspect a medicine is involved, speak to the clinician who prescribed it rather than stopping it yourself.

Get an individual assessment

A dermatologist can investigate the cause and discuss suitable options. Avoid choosing a treatment solely because an ingredient or product name promises growth. An accurate diagnosis is the starting point for effective care.
